Four Days In

We’re four days into the New Year and currently “hunkered down” at home in the middle of Winter Storm Grayson.  From a Long Islander’s point of view, I’d have to say it’s a pretty solid storm.  The winds have been howling all day and Montauk Highway has mostly been empty except for a few diligent snow plows.

It feels a little bit like deja vu.  Because just last week was Christmas Break where we spent quite a few cozy days at home.  And while it may seem silly to some, I have to share my newest though unexpected from of therapeutic leisure.  I had seen advertisements for these tiny DIY dollhouse type kits on Facebook and actually bought one for Ellee for Christmas.  In helping her, I realized that they were tremendously fun so I ended up purchasing this one for myself.  Basically everything comes on papers that you cut out and glue together.  There are also bags of tiny beads and strings and plastic sheets and fabrics.  Finally, there are tiny lights that you wire and join together and after hours and hours of work, this is the end result.  As I mentioned before, it was terribly enjoyable, though definitely frustrating at times since everything is so tiny.  But I was proud at the outcome and definitely enjoyed being creative and crafty.

That being said, I have to say that I do love a good snow day.

Christian had a late volleyball practice last night so slept in quite a bit and then tackled some homework.  Speaking of volleyball, Christian is playing club volleyball for Academy this year and he absolutely loves it.  We’ve loved watching him learn and grow and are excited to see him play at his upcoming tournament in a few weeks.

He’s currently playing his PS4 with friends and eating whatever I put in front of him because that’s kind of what he does these days.  I’m thinking that the combination of sleep and food is helping him to inch ever closer to being the same height as his dad.

This girl has been hanging out in her pajamas and keeping warm by sitting on the old radiators that heat our nearly 100 year old house.

She’s also working hard on finally cleaning her room.  I did catch a quick picture of her with the things that are bringing her joy these days.  You can’t tell so much, but she is sitting on her new bean bag chair that also doubles as storage for the seemingly hundreds of stuffed animals that were taking over her room.  It was a wonderful and practical solution that we both loved.  Behind her is something that I did for both of our kids this year for their birthdays.  I printed out about a hundred pictures of them throughout the years and found a wall in each of their rooms to put the pictures up on.  We are definitely a culture that probably has more pictures than ever, but less prints, so this was a fun way to display so many beautiful memories of our kids throughout the years.  And finally, the planner.  We picked it up at Michaels and she’s loved filling in her days and setting her goals for the new year.

And then there’s this guy.  Jeremy’s an incredible bike rider and thankfully despite the bad weather was able to enjoy a long race today using his bike attached to his trainer and his indoor cycling program Zwift.

So that would conclude our Snow Day update.  The winds continue to gust and howl but for now, I’m just thankful to be safe and warm indoors with our family.  I’m also thankful that four years into this new year, I’ve been able to have time to slowly process and open my heart to the many possibilities that this year brings.

I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus with blogging knowing that I’ve been working to put my own life and thoughts together.  But after this break, I’m learning that I’m finally ready to move forward.  Life is always ups and downs, but writing and photography have always been my best ways to work it all through.  Thank you for sharing this journey with me and I wish you all the best as we see the wonderful things that this new year has to bring!
