Hangtime in January

Hangtime, in case you were wondering, is a free after school program that meets on Wednesday afternoons at Eastport Bible Church from 3:30pm-5:30pm.  Kids get snack, homework help, sports, crafts and skills workshop time, a Bible lesson and small group time.  We have a great team of leaders and student helpers and to be honest, seeing everyone at Hangtime is always a highlight of my week.

I thought I’d share some pictures of what Hangtime in January looks like.  For most kids, winter is cold and a bit dreary at times.  But every Wednesday at Hangtime, these are some of the fun things that our kids get to do:

Science:  One of our lovely leaders led a science workshop for the past few weeks.  Kids enjoyed doing experiments and playing with the snap circuit sets I bought for our daughter  for Christmas last year (sometimes Hangtime is a great place to bring toys and games that have been outgrown).  I loved seeing the kids play at the Science workshop because it was a fun and interactive way for them to learn new things.

Cooking:  We have two amazing teams of cooking teachers for Hangtime this year.  Last week, Ms. Gina was busy in the kitchen teaching the kids to make pasta to go along with her homemade sauce.

The entire church smelled amazing and the kids had a great time.

Crafts:  Our Craft teachers were super fun last week.  They brought in the Pie Face game (which the kids all loved).

And also made ice cream with bananas.  I tried some and it was delicious!

Coloring:  We always have a coloring table right next to our Lego table.  Because kids need to color and play with legos and sometimes there isn’t enough time for this.  Kids are in school and then sports and other after school activities before coming home for homework, dinner and then bedtime.  We always have kids at both tables and it’s delightful to see them taking 45 minutes, just to play.

Sports and Games:  Speaking of play, that’s exactly what happens in the Eastport Elementary School gym for 45 minutes each week during our sports and games workshop.

It’s a huge favorite amongst our kids and I love knowing that they get the chance to run around, especially in the winter.  The school is incredibly gracious to let us use their facilities.  Our daughter is in 4th and only has gym twice a week, so knowing that they get another 45 minutes to run around is something that I, as a parent really love.

Lesson time: And after workshops, we come back together for our lesson time.  Our theme for Hangtime this year, is “Best Life Ever.”  We use the lesson time to encourage the kids to live the best life that they can, which for us is a life that honors God.  We’ve spent the past few months studying the “Best Clothes Ever,” which would be the Armor of God from Ephesians 6.  In this series, we had some amazing guests come in and share about their modern day armor.  Some of our guests included Ms. Virginia, an Eastport fire-fighter, Mr. Rick, a police officer and our friend Uncle Bob, a motorcycle rider.  Last week, we were so Honored to have Mr. Bob Bancroft, who currently serves in the Air Force.  He did an amazing job sharing with the kids about the importance of using the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Bible.

Afterwards, the kids met together to share and pray in their small groups.  It’s always my favorite part of the night because I get to see these amazing young kids growing and learning such important things that will help them throughout their entire lives.

Hangtime in January has been amazing.  And if you’re local and have a child who is K-6th Grade who would like to come and join us for Hangtime, we would love to have them!  Hangtime is completely free and registration is available online at: www.eastportbiblechurch.com under the Hangtime link.  You can also always email me, Laura Herr at lauraherr8@gmail.com for more information.
