‘Twas the night before school and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not Koko, not a mouse.
The backpacks were hung by the table with care, filled with pencils and glue sticks and markers in there.
Our two kids were sleeping all snug in their beds, while homework and school snacks danced round in their heads.
The forms were all filled out, right down to the date. The alarm clocks were set, so we wouldn’t be late.
When right across the street, there arose such a clatter, I jumped to my feel to see what was the matter.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but our beautiful school building all ready for the year.
The windows how they twinkled, the lights all so merry. The brand new refaced brick, bright and red like a cherry.
I knew the teachers would be there, in the morning so bright. I hoped they were getting a long, sleep-filled night.
The halls would soon be filled with children galore, and with students and teachers and helpers and more.
So I prayed for a safe year, of learning and joy. For the Principal and teachers and for each girl and boy.
I know we’re ready for school and it all just feels right. So happy school year to all, and to all a good night!
