Don’t believe everything you read on Pinterest.  Because sometimes it will tell you that coconut oil is a fantastic substitute for chemically sunscreen.  And when your family decides to go out for the entire day and all you bring to protect their skin is coconut oil, it will turn into a major fail.  The plus side though, is that you will smell like a pina colada.  Well, not so much the “pina,” but definitely the “colada.”

All that being said, despite the fact that we are all currently a somewhat scary shade of red, it was probably the most perfect and beautiful day of the summer.  We enjoyed a beach day and took the boat across the bay to Cupsogue.  The kids had a blast, climbing this sandy hill and trying their hardest to “sled” down it on the boogie boards.  It was a nice thought, but didn’t work quite so well in real life.  Thankfully, they didn’t mind one bit.  After they got tired of climbing the hill, they spent a good portion of the day, fishing, catching crabs and minnows and generally just having an awesome time.

After hanging out in the bay, we walked over to enjoy the ocean.  It was a perfect day for wave riding and swimming and in some amazing turn of events, we even ended up seeing a few dolphins as well.  Which kind of just made the day that much more incredible.

Thankfully, I did remember to bring my favorite beach umbrella, so we did find a little relief from the sun underneath it.  Jeremy caught a quick nap while I sat and watched our kids play in the water.

I’d say there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, but technically there were three tiny ones.  But that was it.

These kids were in their glory.  With school starting next week, they are taking in every last little bit that summer has to offer.  And even though I failed in the area of sunscreen, we did have an incredible day.  Which reminds me that sometimes things fail, but there is always so much to celebrate and enjoy in the midst of those fails.  And whereas it was hard for me to not dwell on my poor sunburned family, it was way more worthwhile to look back on the incredible parts of this day and be thankful for everything else that we enjoyed.

  1. I really was going to try this so called “natural sunscreen” It might work if you live in the frozen tundra of the Arctic circle. So sorry your children had to be the guinea pigs, but thank them anyway for me. In Jr HIgh I used Crisco oil. I would get nice and crispy with that 😉
