The Herr Family has grown in numbers and we’re happy to say that it’s a girl. Her name is Koko Cameron Herr and she is a beautiful one year old leopard gecko.
Now, if you know anything about our family, you would know that we’re self proclaimed non-pet people. At least according to Jeremy and I. We’ve tried Bettas and Hermit Crabs but didn’t really get too far, since fish aren’t all that interesting for kids and the hermit crabs were nocturnal and strange. However, a few days ago, our kids got it in their minds that they desperately needed a pet. And remembering being their age and feeling the same way, it was fun to entertain the thought. Christian worked hard to convince us that we should get a snake, but when the Petco lady told us that snakes were hard to manage and that it would probably bite the kids, we decided to try another route.
We ended up with a leopard gecko. Well, first, we ended up with a $50 Desert tank setup (it was on sale, down from $70, which made me happy). It didn’t come with the rock or the plant, but we added those later on. We were told that the tank needed to be a certain temperature and humidity, so we bought the tank and planned to get the gecko the next day.
In a very cool turn of events, I messaged our friend Doug who actually breeds and raises all sorts of beautiful reptilian creatures. He happened to have a one year old female and graciously offered to give her to us as our pet. When we went to pick her up and saw how beautiful and healthy she was, we were so excited and so thankful to be blessed in this fun way.
So we picked her up and then went to the pet store for a few more supplies before bringing her home. The kids were so excited and equally fun was seeing Jeremy excited for them as well.
We came up with the name Koko, because she’s a gec(ko) and it just seemed fitting and Ellee picked out the middle name because it was the same as hers.
And that’s the story of how we ended up with our first, mostly real pet (since I’m not really counting pets we’ve had that the kids couldn’t really play with). Thus far, Koko Cameron has been awesome. She is fun to hold and play with and she is absolutely the perfect pet for us.
That sweet and irresistible smile on Christian’s face is, I am sure, a big part of why you now have a pet. Dad looks a little nervous and maybe still creeped out 😉
